CRUNCH!

For a few short minutes every night, a soft crunching noise fills the living room. It is a very distinct crunch, sort of a sloppy crunch as opposed to a crack or snapping. It is coming from Rugby's cage, as he methodically swallows baby rabbits whole. He always starts with the head, for some reason.

Rugby is fed a raw meaty bones diet, although his dinner doesn't always have a face when he eats it. He loves the raw food, and I love it too! His poop is smaller and hardly smells at all, but the best part is that his teeth get cleaned with all that crunching, chewing, and ripping he does.

There is a down side to this type of diet, and it is mostly inconvenience! Rugby has his own freezer and he has to remind me every morning to take his food out so it can defrost in time for dinner. Our other complaint is for the especially messy meals that leaves Rugby with a blood stained beard and legs that need cleaning. Oh the things we do for our dogs!

What do your dogs eat? Would love to see videos of your dogs while they 'chow down!'

  1. Wow Rugby, you've got some great jaws! :) We would love to have a raw diet but it is too expensive here. We get fed very high dollar kibble but raw would cost even more :( We do get raw treats sometimes and we love them.

  2. Wow, I wouldn't mess with you. Your jaws are terrifying. BOL. I am fed kibbles, it is hard to get good raw meat in Singapore, and my furmaily doesn't really eat red meat.

  4. you said he swallows them whole? Yikes. Rugby must not only have an amazing jaw, but amazing digestive enzymes too! That's a lot of breakin' down to do!!

  6. Yummo! I bet that tasted SO good. Love those sounds you were making when you were chewing those juicy meatables. It makes me hungry. The other day we got to raw red meat. We don't get to eat raw meat all the time, only once in a while as a treat & supplement. Our main staple food is kibbles & home cooked.

  7. Duncan eats Taste of the Wild right now. He was eating raw for a while, but he's on antacids for a bit, and so he's back on heat treated kibble for safety.

When he turned three, I went a bit nuts on cooking for him. I made him a meatloaf "cake" with instant mashed potato "frosting", and a carrot and peanut butter cake. He loved the carrot cake, and he liked the potatoes, but the meatloaf was a "meh", though he did eat it... last.
